Shades, blinds, shutters, or draperies all opening and closing by touching a button on a handheld remote control.

Now in 2024, a homeowner can operate  window treatments with an app on their phone OR by voice control, without locating and picking up the remote.  “Alexa, close the Kitchen shades.”

In fact, with an APP on your device, shades can be programmed with settings to operate on their own, without any daily command from the homeowner.

At one time, these options were considered high-end, and not affordable for most homeowners.

Like all technology, once public interest increases, and the number of companies offering the technology increases, the prices go down.  This has made motorization for window treatments so much more affordable for most homeowners.

Another driver of the cost of window treatment motorization going down, was the big push for operating systems that are Child Safe! The window treatment industry was aware that Child Safety regulations from the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) were taking affect on June 1, 2024. ( See my blog post from 6/10/2024 for more info)

This meant that all manufacturers of any type of window covering, needed to find alternatives to Operating Cords that were going to be eliminated.  Motorization became one of the most practical options as an alternative to cords!  Now with the new regulations in place, for some treatments, the only operating options are Cordless and motorized.

Let’s say that window treatment motorization is enjoying it’s day in the SUN !

But how do you know if it’s right for you?

  • High windows, in a 2-story room or Entryway, that cannot be reached to operate a shade,

but allow in uncomfortable amounts of sunlight at times of the day. Or require insulation in the Winter.

  • A room with several windows, that you open and close the shades/blinds/drapes routinely all at the same time. Motorization offers the convenience of eliminating manual operation.
  • In a home with small children, motorization is deemed one of the safest options for control.
  • In a vacation/2nd home. When the home is unoccupied, you can operate the shades remotely or on a schedule to give the appearance that someone is in the home.  The schedule would protect your fine furnishings and flooring from the sun’s glare during peak times, also providing energy efficiency.
  • In an office or home where several people may be operating the shades. Motorization provides consistency in the way the shades are raised and lowered which prolongs the life of the product.
  • Provides ease and safety of operation for an elderly person.

With so many options for window treatment motorization, you can get the exact options that you need at a price that is affordable.
